Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20 lean/fat ratio)
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Mix until well combined, but try not to overwork the meat.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
Cook the Hamburger Steaks:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Once the oil is hot, add the hamburger patties to the skillet.
Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through.
Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
Make the Onion Gravy:
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions.
Cook the onions until they are caramelized and softened, stirring occasionally, about 8-10 minutes.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir to combine, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes.
Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook until the gravy has thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the onion gravy.
Allow them to heat through for a couple of minutes.
Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Serve the hamburger steaks hot with the onion gravy spooned over the top.
